Sevyn Streeter Gets Apology from 76ers After Being Denied National Anthem Performance

Sevyn Streeter has received an apology from the Philadelphia 76ers after the team blocked her from singing the National Anthem due to her “We Matter” t-shirt.

The R&B singer was told two minutes before her scheduled performance that she was not allowed to sing and instead, one of the team’s dancers performed instead.

“We are sorry that this happened,” the team said in a statement (via Huffington Post). “After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcome to sing. We apologize to her.”

Sevyn Streeter Wears 'We Matter' Jersey, Denied National Anthem Performance by 76ers

Sevyn Streeter was scheduled to perform the National Anthem at a Philadelphia 76ers basketball game on Wednesday (October 26), but the team wouldn’t let her sing because she was wearing a “We Matter” jersey.

The 30-year-old R&B singer posted an Instagram video explaining the situation after she was denied her stage time.

“I was supposed to sing the national anthem at the @sixers and @okcthunder game in #Philly but minutes before @sixers organization said I could not because I was wearing a “We Matter” jersey. WTF!” Sevyn captioned the below video.

Sevyn opened up to the Associated Press about what happened.

“I’d say two minutes before we were about to walk out… the organization told me that I could not wear my shirt while singing the national anthem at their game,” Sevyn said. “I was never given any kind of dress code. I was never asked beforehand to show my wardrobe… I was angry, extremely, extremely angry and disappointed and honestly brought to tears by all of it. It broke my heart. Honestly, I was very excited about being able to perform the national anthem. I was really looking forward to that.”

Here is how the 76ers responded: “The Philadelphia 76ers organization encourages meaningful actions to drive social change. We use our games to bring people together, to build trust and to strengthen our communities. As we move from symbolic gestures to action, we will continue to leverage our platform to positively impact our community.”
