Shailene Woodley Opens Up About Dakota Access Pipeline Issue in Essay

Shailene Woodley has written a moving essay about her recent arrest on TIME.com.

The Snowden actress was arrested earlier this month, when protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline along with others, and opened up about what the pipeline would do, standing by her not guilty plea, and more.

“I was in North Dakota, standing in solidarity, side-by-side with a group of over 200 water protectors, people who are fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline. People who carry a rainbow of colors on their skin. People who gathered together because they realize that if we don’t begin taking genuine steps to protect our precious resources—our soil, our water, our essential elements—we will not have a healthy or thriving planet to pass on to future generations. I was in North Dakota, standing side by side with Native Americans. You know, those who were here before us. Well, guess what, America? They’re still here. And they are still fighting the good fight. A fight that serves each and every one of us,” she begun.

Shailene continued later, “The reason we were freezing our a—es off on Oct. 10 in peaceful protest was because the night before (mind you, right after the presidential debate and on the eve of Indigenous Peoples’ Day—coincidence?) the U.S. Court of Appeals denied an injunction to halt construction of the pipeline. As in: They began building once again. Whatever your cause is. Whatever your passion is. Whatever you care about most… none of your efforts or hard-earned opinions will matter when the planet and the people you’re fighting for have nothing left to show for it.”

Shailene Woodley Pleads Not Guilty After Arrest During Pipeline Protest

Shailene Woodley has pleaded not guilty after being arrested during a peaceful protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline, according to TMZ.

The 24-year-old actress was not present in the courtroom on Wednesday morning (October 19) but her lawyer entered the plea at the North Dakota courthouse.

Shailene was charged with one count of misdemeanor criminal trespass and one count of misdemeanor engaging in a riot.

She was arrested last week while protesting despite complying with officers requests and documented the entire event on Facebook Live. Shailene was taken to a local jail but was released hours later.

The new pipeline has caused controversy because it is set to be built on Standing Rock Sioux land and burial grounds.

Shailene Woodley Breaks Silence After Peaceful Protest Arrest

Shailene Woodley has returned to social media after being arrested while peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The 24-year-old Divergent actress filmed her arrest and aired it on Facebook Live. She was singled out by the police as she was “identified” to them because of her celebrity.

Shailene took to Instagram to share a photo of a lake along with an inspiring caption.

“one day, baby, we’ll sing our poetry. the words dripping from our tongues wet with ripened patience. and the lyrics, the sweet fruits born from the seeds our aging hands are now sowing. #alwaysinallways #heartforward #uptous #NoDAPL #protectcleanwater #iamonyourside,” Shailene wrote.

Shailene Woodley has been released from jail following her arrest while peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline on Monday (October 10) in Sioux County, North Dakota.

The 24-year-old actress was taken to Morton County Jail where she was released hours later.

“She appreciates the outpouring of support, not only for her, but more importantly, for the continued fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline,” her publicist told E! News.

Shailene recorded her arrest, as well the entire protest of the pipeline on Facebook Live. The new pipeline has caused controversy because it is set to be built on Standing Rock Sioux land and burial grounds.

Shailene Woodley Films Arrest on Facebook Live - Watch Video

Shailene Woodley was arrested on Monday morning while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline and she filmed the full arrest on Facebook Live.

The 24-year-old actress was arrested for criminal trespassing and she filmed the full two hour protest, which ended in her being arrested while trying to get into her car.

“I don’t know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there, so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and they said that I was not allowed to continue, and they had giant guns and batons and zip ties and they’re not letting me go,” Shailene says near the end of the video. She was told she is the only one being arrested as she was the only one “identified.”

“Alright, I’m being arrested… because I was trespassing like everyone. But as soon as you guys asked me to leave, I left. She was down there, everybody was down there,” Shailene continued. “I’m being arrested. I was down there with everybody else. I don’t know what’s going on. As soon as they came, I left. It’s because I’m well known. It’s because I have 40,000 people watching.”

“So everybody knows, we were going to our vehicle, which they had all surrounded and waiting for me with giant guns and a giant truck behind them just so they could arrest me. I hope you’re watching mainstream media,” Shai says before she is taken away by police.
