Shonda Rhimes & Her Leading Ladies Cover EW's New Issue!

Shonda Rhimes and her leading ladies, Kerry Washington, Ellen Pompeo, and Viola Davis take the cover of EW‘s latest issue!

There are four separate covers highlighting Shonda‘s his ABC shows Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Scandal. Here’s what the cast had to share about their shows:

Ellen, on the sexist response to McDreamy’s death: “All of a sudden, Patrick [Dempsey] leaves, and it’s like, Oh my God, Meredith’s gonna get killed with Alzheimer’s! The show couldn’t possibly go on without the man!”

Viola, on colorism in the entertainment industry: “You have to come from Detroit or Atlanta to be black. If you have John Denver on your iPod and you come from Central Falls, Rhode Island, then: Eh, you trickle-down black woman.”

Kerry, on why it’s different to work for a female showrunner: “I was talking to an actress who’s pregnant and really worried about telling her bosses, and I said, ‘Yeah, when I told my boss I was pregnant, she literally jumped up and down in my trailer.’ I don’t know if there’s a male showrunner who would do that.”

Kerry Washington Says Olivia Pope Is Not a Role Model

Kerry Washington and Viola Davis are all smiles while attending the ABC portion of the 2015 Summer TCA Tour on Tuesday (August 4) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The ladies were joined by Shonda Rhimes, the creator of their respective shows Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, and Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ellen Pompeo.

Kerry opened up about why she doesn’t think her character Olivia Pope should be a role model.

“I’ve always thought it was misguided when people tell me that Olivia is their role model,” Kerry said (via TV Line). “Because she’s having an affair with a married man, who is President of the United States. And a murderer.”

“There are things that are very admirable,” she added. “She’s an entrepeneur, she’s very smart, she has an amazing closet… [but] she is nobody’s role model.”

FYI: Kerry is wearing a Mary Katrantzou dress and Christian Louboutin shoes. Viola is wearing a Carmen Marc Valvo dress.

Shonda Rhimes Defends Killing Derek Off 'Grey's Anatomy'

Ellen Pompeo and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes sit in a panel together during the ABC portion of the 2015 Summer TCA Tour on Tuesday (August 4) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The ladies were joined on the panel by Scandal‘s Kerry Washington and How to Get Away with Murder‘s Viola Davis.

Shonda opened up about why she decided to kill off Patrick Dempsey‘s character Derek from Grey’s Anatomy after the actor made plans to leave the show.

“The decision to have the character die the way that he did, was not a difficult one in the sense of what were the options? Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith and leave her high and dry and what was that going to mean?” Shonda said (via THR). “That was going to suggest that their love was not true — that the thing we said for 11 years was a lie and McDreamy wasn’t McDreamy and that was untenable. Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love. As painful as it was for me as a storyteller because I never thought that would happen, the only way to preserve that is Derek had to die for that love to remain honest. I couldn’t have that he turned out to be a bad guy who walked out on his wife and kid … for me, the only way was to make Derek and Meredith’s magic to remain true and forever frozen in time.”

FYI: Ellen is wearing a Roland Mouret outfit, Aquazzura shoes, and jewelry by Jennifer Meyer and Rachel Katz.

Shonda Rhimes Speaks Out After Shocking 'Grey's Anatomy' Death Scene

SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!

Shonda Rhimes has released a statement regarding the sudden death of Patrick Dempsey‘s character Derek Shepherd on her hit show Grey’s Anatomy.

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy,” Shonda said in the statement. “Patrick Dempsey‘s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example — happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true — of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”

ABC also issued a statement that read, “After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story. The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.”
