Shonda Rhimes Calls This Year's History-Making Emmys 'Embarrassing'

Shonda Rhimes was not a big fan of this year’s Emmy Awards.

The 47-year-old Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator said that she’s worried that after this year’s historic big wins will make the TV industry think that they’ve made enough progress.

“It’s embarrassing, frankly,” Shonda told Vanity Fair. “To me, it feels embarrassing that we are still in a place in which we still have to note these moments.” “I’m hoping that it’s not a trend. I’m hoping that people don’t feel satisfied because they saw a lot of people win, and then think that we’re done.”

Donald Glover became the first African American to win an Emmy for Comedy Directing while Lena Waithe became the first African American women to win a Comedy Writing award for Master of None.

“I’m hoping that it’s not a trend,” Shonda said. “I’m hoping that people don’t feel satisfied because they saw a lot of people win, and then think that we’re done.”

Shonda Rhimes Leaves ABC, Signs Deal with Netflix

Shonda Rhimes is saying goodbye to ABC after 15 years.

The 47-year-old executive producer of hit ABC shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder is bringing her Shondaland production company to Netflix in a new multi-year deal to produce new series and projects.

“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” Shonda said in a statement released by Netflix. “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for — the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”

Shonda‘s fellow executive producer Betsy Beers will also be joining Shonda in the move to Netflix.

ABC will continue airing all of Shonda‘s current shows on the network.

“Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and Shondaland will be there every step of the way,” Shonda continued. “I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people – especially our studio gladiator Patrick Moran and our most powerful and brilliant champion Channing Dungey.”
