Netflix Announces Animated 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Series In Development For 2022 Premiere

Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Netflix!

Announced today (February 1), the series will be titled Sonic Prime and is slated for premiere in 2022.

Expected to have 24 episodes, Sonic Prime is aimed at kids aged six to 11, as well as legacy Sonic fans of all ages and the story will focus on the “Blue Blur” of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands.

Sonic’s adventure in the new series “is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.”

“Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own,” Netflix’s Director of Original Animation, Dominique Bazay, shared in a statement. “I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”

It was recently announced that the recent Sonic The Hedgehog movie is getting a sequel.

Sonic the Hedgehog is coming back to theaters!

Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy confirmed that they’ve started work on a sequel to the live-action family comedy, via Variety on Thursday (May 28).

The sequel will bring back Jeff Fowler as the director, and original script writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Decisions have not yet been made regarding casting, and there is not yet a production start date.

The first film told the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his new best friend Tom (played by James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) as he plots world domination.

It went on to be huge at the box office – garnering the highest opening weekend of all time for a movie based on a video game.

Sonic the Hedgehog is getting ready for the Easter holiday by giving fans what they want – all the Easter Eggs in the movie!

Paramount Pictures has released a new video which shows off all the Easter Eggs you saw, and the ones that you didn’t see at all.

The term “Easter egg” as it pertains to movies, means that there is something – a message, image or feature – hidden in the movie, and there are a ton in the film.

Some are a bit obvious, and others, not so much.

'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie to Get an Early Digital Release

Paramount Pictures has announced that the hit movie Sonic the Hedgehog will be getting an early digital release now that movie theaters across the country have been shut down.

The movie was released in theaters on February 14 and became a box office hit with $146 million domestically and over $300 million worldwide.

Fans will now be able to watch the movie on digital HD and VOD starting on March 31.

'Sonic the Hedgehog' Remains No. 1 at the Box Office for a Second Week!

Sonic the Hedgehog is continuing to speed ahead.

The film once again dominated at the box office, pulling in $26.3 million in its second week, according to Variety on Sunday (February 23).

The movie narrowly beat out Harrison Ford‘s Call of the Wild, which debuted at $25 million.

The movie debuted at $70 million in its first week, and has now crossed the $100 million mark in North America. It’s also made nearly $100 million internationally, pushing it past the $200 million mark overall.

Other movie tallies for the week included Brahms: The Boy II, which opened at $6 million, and Birds of Prey at $7 million, earning $72 million domestically and $173.7 million globally overall.

'Sonic the Hedgehog' Sets Video Game Movie Opening Record at Box Office!

Sonic the Hedgehog is a record-breaking smash hit!

The Paramount film brought in $57 million over its three-day North American opening at the box office, setting a record for a video game adaptation, THR reported on Sunday (February 16).

The movie is now projected to pull in a four-day gross of $68 million over Presidents Day weekend, making it one of the best openings ever for the long weekend.

Detective Pikachu previously held the record for the best North American opening for a video game adaptation with $54.3 million in 2019.

The movie also brought in $43 million overseas, giving it a total global haul of $111 million through Monday.

The film has an A CinemaScore, and a 63% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Ben Schwartz voices the titular Sonic, teaming up with a sheriff (James Marsden) to battle evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

The video game adaptation brought in $21 million on Friday (February 14) for a projected four-day debut of over $60 million, according to THR on Saturday (February 15).

And according to reports, assuming the movie holds the same interest throughout the weekend, it’ll be the biggest domestic opening ever for a video game adaptation. (Detective Pikachu debuted at $54.3 million.)

The film has an A CinemaScore, and a 64% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.
