Ryan Murphy Explains Why 'The Politician' Season 3 Likely Won't Happen for Several Years

Season two of The Politician just premiered on Netflix, but fans will likely be waiting a long time for the third (and possibly final) season of the series.

The show’s co-creator Ryan Murphy has explained why he won’t move forward with a third season for several years.

“I think for me, for that show, I would like to do, and I think all of us involved in it, would probably like to do three seasons total,” Ryan told Collider. “And I think where season two ends, what I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race. That would obviously be a presidential race, right? That’s always what we had designed, and I think that’s what our plan is. I’m going to wait. Ben is young, so I want to wait a couple of years to figure out how we age him up a little bit. But that’s always been my plan.”

Ben Platt Covers a Classic Broadway Song in 'The Politician' Season 2 - Here It Now!

Ben Platt gets the chance to show off his incredible vocals in the second season of The Politician, which is now streaming on Netflix.

The 26-year-old singer performs an acoustic rendition of his own song “Run Away” during a scene in the season finale. His character, Payton Hobart, then gets called back to do an encore performance and he sings “Corner of the Sky” from the Broadway musical Pippin.

“Run Away” is a song that is featured on Ben‘s debut album Sing to Me Instead. If you want to see him perform the songs live, you should check out his concert special on Netflix.

Last month, it was revealed that Ben is dating an actor who also played the lead role in the musical Dear Evan Hansen.

'The Politician' Season Two Gets First Look Photos & Official Premiere Date!

Here is your first look at The Politician‘s second season on Netflix!

A synopsis of the second season is as follows: Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) fights to unseat Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race. As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy, but Payton – who sees this as the next step on his path to the Presidency – must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple. Meanwhile, his mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage him and everything he’s hoping to accomplish. But if Payton wants to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character, he must find his voice and strengthen his political message to inspire and excite the voters.

The show, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk (Gwyneth‘s husband!), and Ian Brennan, will debut the new season on June 19.

Creator Ryan Murphy just confirmed that the Netflix series will still be premiering this summer despite the pandemic.

“Season two, we were lucky enough that we finished filming and editing right before the coronavirus thing happened,” he told Collider. “We have seven. We finished all of our episodes. We have a great second season and I think we’re trying to figure out how do we mix them now in the social distancing age. I think we’ve figured it out. It’s going to come out in the middle of June still, season two. I’m really proud of it. I love what we came up with, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan and I.”

As for season 3, check back in a couple of years. “What I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race,” Ryan shared. “That would obviously be a presidential race, right? The Ending of 'The Politician' Can't Actually Happen in Real Life

SPOILER ALERT – This post contains spoilers for the final episode of The Politician season one, so continue reading at your own risk.

The first season of the new Ryan Murphy series The Politician is streaming now on Netflix and the ending perfectly sets up a second season for the show.

Ben Platt‘s character Payton Hobart announces that he’s running for the State Senate seat that Judith Light‘s character Dede Standish was previously running for unopposed.

Vulture did some research into the requirements to run for a State Senate seat in New York and discovered that Payton likely does not meet them, so this wouldn’t actually happen in real life.

“I don’t want to comment on a TV show I have not seen, but for New York State Senate, which is different from United States senators, you have to be a citizen, you have to be 18 years of age, and you have to be a resident of the state for five years and a resident of the district for 12 months immediately preceding election,” a spokesperson for the New York Board of Elections said. “Part of that comes from the New York State Constitution and the other part is the Public Officers Law.”

At the time of the election, Payton will only have been in New York State for three years following his move from California, so there’s no way that he’d meet the eligibility requirements to run.

This Ben Platt Song Is Featured Throughout 'The Politician'

If you watch the new Netflix series The Politician, you might recognize the song that Ben Platt‘s character Payton is playing on the piano throughout several episodes.

The 26-year-old actor never actually sings the words to the song, but fans of Ben‘s original music will know the song is “Run Away” from his album Sing to Me Instead.

The song first makes an appearance in the second episode of The Politician and we caught at least two more times it was featured throughout the season.

Ben has said “Run Away” is the first song that he wrote for his album and it was inspired by his parent’s relationship.
