AMC Refuses To Play Universal Films After 'Trolls World Tour' Comments By Universal CEO

AMC is firing back at Universal Pictures after the CEO opened up about the success of their straight to VOD success with Trolls World Tour.

The animated flick earned $95 million in rental fees in the first 19 days on demand.

Now, AMC boss Adam Aron wrote a letter to Universal Studios Chairman Donna Langley in response to NBC Universal CEO’s Jeff Shell‘s statements about the success and his points that “as soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats.”

The letter explains that he understood that the decision to take Trolls World Tour into homes was an exception during the coronavirus pandemic, which forced all theaters to close for the safety of the country.

“Going forward, AMC will not license any Universal movies in any of our 1,000 theatres globally on these terms,” Aron’s letter said.

Universal to Release 'The Invisible Man,' 'Trolls World Tour,' & More Early on Home Entertainment

Universal Pictures is making it possible for fans to watch their new movies at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

After it was announced that all movie theaters in New York City and Los Angeles have been ordered to shut down, the movie company has announced that they will be making its movies available on home entertainment on the same day as the films’ global theatrical releases.

Movies like The Invisible Man, The Hunt, and Emma will all be released on home entertainment services such as On-Demand, Apple, and Amazon starting on Friday, March 20. Trolls World Tour will be released on April 10, the same day it was scheduled to hit theaters.

“Universal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception. Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in a statement via Variety. “We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.”

The films will be available for a 48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99.
