The City of Compton has decided to dedicate a tennis court to Serena and Venus Williams.
On Saturday (November 12), the sisters returned to the tennis court in Compton, Calif., where they first learned their skills before going on to become tennis superstars.
The court will be called the Venus and Serena Williams Court of Champions.
“We literally lived around the corner, so just driving here brought back so many memories,” Serena told the crowd of fans at the dedication ceremony (via ABC News). “We definitely want to see some more champions come from these courts.”
“It’s been a surreal experience to be back in this way,” Venus added. “To have the tennis court refurbished, to make sure that there’s coaching available, to make sure that these programs go on and to make sure that this sport stays here in our community – it’s a big part of bringing us all up and creating positivity for young people.”
After the event, the duo judged food and dance competitions at the Healthy Compton Festival.
