Viola Davis Is Super Excited to Receive Harvard's Artist Of The Year 2017 Awards

Viola Davis looks really excited as she goes up to receive the Artist of the Year Award at Harvard University on Saturday (March 4) in Cambridge, Mass.

The 51-year-old Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner gave a speech to the students after she was awarded, and gave them a little advice.

“I spent so many years at Juilliard just wanting to beat somebody up. I think it was the height of my anger; that chip on my shoulder,” she said, via People. “I’m still trying to take care of that chip on my shoulder, by the way. It was mainly because I felt my voice as an artist was being stifled.”

“I want people to be seen. I want them to feel less alone,” Viola said. “I think Picasso is the one who said ‘I paint because I want to show people what’s going on behind the eyes.’”

Viola Davis Shares the Heartbreaking Reason She Only Has One Photo From Her Childhood

Viola Davis is opening up about her childhood growing up hungry and extremely poor in Rhode Island.

“The only picture I have of my childhood is the picture of me in kindergarten,” the 51-year-old Oscar winner told People. “I have this expression on my face — it’s not a smile, it’s not a frown. I swear to you, that’s the girl who wakes up in the morning and who looks around her house and her life saying, ‘I cannot believe how God has blessed me.’“

Viola noted that her family could not afford to own a camera.

“I was the kind of poor where I knew right away I had less than everyone around me,” Viola added. “Our environment, our physical space reflected our income…the boards were coming off the walls…shoddy plumbing and no phone and no food and rats and all of that. That very much was visible to me.”

“I chose from a very young age that I didn’t want that for my life. And it very much has helped me appreciate and value the things that are in my life now because I never had it. A yard, a house, great plumbing, a full refrigerator, things that people take for granted, I don’t,” Viola continued.

Viola Davis Opens Up About How Her Childhood Poverty, Says It Helped Her Not Take Life for Granted

Viola Davis has just won an Oscar, and now she’s opening up about her growing up in poverty.

The 51-year-old Fences star opened up to People Magazine where she said that she and her family struggled with hunger, terrible housing conditions, and racists remarks from bullies.

“I was the kind of poor where I knew right away I had less than everyone around me,” Viola said. “Our environment, our physical space reflected our income.” At home, “the boards were coming off the walls,” she says, and the family endured “shoddy plumbing and no phone and no food and rats and all of that. That very much was visible to me.”

Despite her upbringing, Viola says that growing up poor helped motivate her to want to give herself a better life.

“It became motivation as opposed to something else — the thing about poverty is that it starts affecting your mind and your spirit because people don’t see you,” Viola said. “I chose from a very young age that I didn’t want that for my life. And it very much has helped me appreciate and value the things that are in my life now because I never had it. A yard, a house, great plumbing, a full refrigerator, things that people take for granted, I don’t.”
