The Best Supporting Actress category for the 2017 Oscars is making history for an amazing reason.
It is the first time in Oscars history where three black female performers were nominated in an acting category at the same time. It is also the first time that three black artists hold a majority in any category.
Viola Davis has already earned herself the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for her work in Fences at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards – but she admits that the whole language of it all was quite “difficult.”
“I mean Denzel [Washington] had a 13-page monologue, I had a four-page monologue and [Wilson] has a tendency to write monologues that are very rapid, that are like rants, so you got to keep it going, but its got to be felt,” the 51-year-old actress explained during a panel at the new BUILD Studio on Tuesday (January 17) in New York City.
“You cannot leave out a word. It’s very much like Shakespeare in that sense,” Viola added (via PageSix). “You can’t leave out an ‘and’ or a ‘but’ or you mess up the whole poetry of the line. In fact, when you would rehearse with August, if you missed an ‘and’ or a ‘but’ you’d have to go back and do it again.”
That same day, Viola was spotted all smiles while making her way out of Good Morning America after promoting Fences.

The best part of the Golden Globes is you never know what you’re going to get. Last night’s speeches gave us a wide range of emotions from the winners — from shock to gratitude to sheer pleasure. And, no surprise, there was a fair share of political poignancy.
Here is a glimpse of our favorite seven speeches from the evening:
