'Wicked' Movie Musical Postponed Again

Wicked, the upcoming movie musical based on the smash hit Broadway show, has been postponed again.

The movie was originally supposed to hit theaters on December 20, 2019, but the release date was delayed and the studio gave that slot to another movie musical, Cats. The studio then gave Wicked a new release date of December 22, 2021. However, Universal has once again pushed the movie musical back due to the shuffling on many release dates based on the global health crisis.

Now, Universal has chosen to put Sing 2 on December 22, 2021. Wicked does not have a new release date at this time.

The studio also announced that Minions: The Rise of Gru will now be released on July 2, 2021, The Wrap reports.

Idina Menzel, the original Elphaba on Broadway, recently weighed in on potential casting for the film!

The 'Wicked' Movie Should Have Been in Theaters Right Now

It has been years since Universal Pictures announced that the Broadway musical Wicked was going to be made and the original release date just passed.

Wicked was supposed to hit theaters on December 20, 2019, but the release date was delayed and the studio gave that slot to another movie musical, Cats.

The Wicked movie is now expected to be released in theaters on December 22, 2021.

Not much is known about the movie still, other than some members of the creative team, including director Stephen Daldry. He is the three-time Oscar-nominated director of Billy Elliott, The Hours, and The Reader. He also won an Emmy for directing The Crown for Netflix.

Original cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have both been suggesting stars like Ariana Grande and Dove Cameron for the roles of Elphaba and Glinda. No casting has been announced yet!

Idina Menzel Gives Elphaba Casting Opinion for 'Wicked' Movie

Idina Menzel originated the role of Elphaba in the Wicked musical on Broadway back in 2003 and a feature film version is currently in the works.

So, who does Idina see playing the role of the green girl on screen?

Ariana Grande has been one name that keeps coming up in conversations for the movie and Idina recently worked with her on a duet for her Christmas album. While on Andy Cohen‘s SiriusXM show this week, the host asked about working with the young singer.

“I knew she was a fan because we did the Wicked reunion together. She sang ‘The Wizard and I.’ She’d be amazing [as Elphaba in the movie]. She kicked ass on ‘The Wizard and I.’ She sang stuff I never would have even thought of. I was like, ‘Why didn’t I ever sing it like that?!’” Idina said.

Sounds like Ariana‘s team is hoping she’ll land the role as her manager Scooter Braun retweeted the interview clip!
