'Wicked' Movie Delayed, Will Get a New Release Date

The film version of the Broadway musical Wicked has been delayed.

The movie was originally set to be released on December 20, 2019, but the movie will be re-dated and Universal Pictures will announce a new date soon.

Cats, another movie musical based on a popular Broadway show, will now get that release date.

The Wicked movie will be directed by Stephen Daldry and the musical’s bookwriter Winnie Holzman is writing the screenplay. No casting details have been announced just yet.

See who JJ readers voted to play Glinda and Elphaba in our poll.

'Wicked' Movie Casting Poll - Vote for Your Glinda & Elphaba!

The Wicked movie is exactly two years away from hitting theaters and we want to know who you think should be cast in the roles of Glinda and Elphaba!

Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles in the Broadway production back in 2003, but now that they are both in their 40s, they’ve probably missed their chance at playing college-aged girls on screen. This is something they’ve both admitted and Kristin has even suggested herself for the role of Madame Morrible!

Kristin has voiced her dream casts for two separate age groups. If they are going for actresses in their early 30s, she would chose Beth Behrs as Glinda and Lea Michele as Elphaba. If they are going for early 20s, she would pick her mini-me Dove Cameron as Glinda and Ariana Grande as Elphaba.

We’ve added some more possible choices for each role and you can even write in your own answer if we didn’t include your favorite actress. Voting will end at the end of 2017, exactly at 11:59pm EST on December 31.

The Wicked movie will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2019 and we’re already counting down the days. Until then, you can see the musical on Broadway and in productions around the world!

Broadway's 'Wicked' Pays Homage to 'Star Wars' with Intro Scroll Video!

The Broadway musical Wicked is paying homage to the Star Wars franchise with an intro scroll video, which the show captioned “Wicked: The Last Witch.”

This is of course in reference to the new movie’s title The Last Jedi.

The scroll reads: “Long before Dorothy arrives there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin – smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships… until the world decides to call one ‘good,’ and the other one ‘wicked.’”

Wicked opened on Broadway over 14 years ago, with original cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, and is still selling out today with productions all over the world. Go see it!
