Will Smith Talks 'Independence Day 2' & Fate of His Character

Will Smith has broken his silence regarding the upcoming movie Independence Day: Resurgence.

The 47-year-old actor, who won’t be appearing in the sequel, reveals how he first reacted when he heard his character Steve Hiller – SPOILER ALERT! – had died.

“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time,” Will told Yahoo. “[Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out…It was terrible when I found out my character died.”

Will Smith looks super sharp while attending the premiere of his new film Concussion held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square on Wednesday night (December 16) in New York City.

The 47-year-old actor was joined on the red carpet by his co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Morse.

The day before, Will was all smiles while stepping out for an appearance on Good Morning America.

Serena Williams Accepts Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year Award - Watch Her Speech Here!

Serena Williams happily poses alongside her sister Venus while attending the 2015 Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year Award Ceremony held at Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers on Monday (December 15) in New York City.

The 34-year-old tennis superstar was also joined by Will Smith and Chanel Iman, as well as her mother and coach Oracene Price and her two other daughters Lyndrea and Isha.

“I believed that one day I would stand on that court and hold that winner’s trophy,” Serena expressed during her speech. “Now, 30 years later, I still have goals and I still have dreams of winning, and this award actually makes me want to work harder to reach more goals. Will Smith May Run For President If People Keep Saying 'Crazy Kinds Of Stuff'

Will Smith is dapper as he poses for photographs at his photo call for his latest film Concussion held at the Crosby Street Hotel on Monday (December 14) in New York City.

The 47-year-old actor was joined at the event by his co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Morse, director Peter Landesman, and producers Elizabeth Cantillon and Giannina Scott.

In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Will joked that he may be forced into running for president if this year’s presidential race continues to escalate.

“If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about walls and Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena,” Will expressed. “I mean, I gotta be the President. Come on! What else would I run for?”

Kirsten Dunst & Will Smith Play Catchphrase with Jimmy Fallon!

Kirsten Dunst and Will Smith compete against each other during a game of Catchphrase on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday night (December 11) in New York City.

Will Smith Says Wife Jada Gave Him the Golden Globes News!

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith make a picture perfect couple while posing for photos inside at the 2015 Diamond Ball held at Barker Hanger on Thursday (December 10) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The power couple are at the event to support Rihanna and her Clara Lionel Foundation.

Earlier in the day, Will was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in the movie Concussion and he says he was asleep when it was announced.

“My wife slapped me out of my sleep to wake me up and tell me,” Will told the New York Times. “She was just so ecstatic. It was like a really great married moment. We were so bound together. It was us, it was ours, ‘we’ were nominated. It was a great recognition of how far we’ve come as a couple.”

Will Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Caine and Joel Edgerton take the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable issue.

Here’s what they had to share with the mag:

Will, on prejudice vs. racism: “My wife and I were just having this conversation, and we were going to the dictionary for ‘prejudice’ versus ‘racism.’ Everybody is prejudiced. Everybody has their life experiences that make them prefer one thing over another — it makes them prefer blond hair over a brunette; if you see somebody with dark skin walking down the street, you have a different reaction than you have [with] someone who is 5-foot-1 and white. But there is a connotation with racism of superiority: You feel that your race generally is superior. And I have to say, I live with constant prejudice, but racism is actually rare — someone who thinks their race is superior. I don’t want to work for them. I don’t want to work at that company. And the times I have come in contact with it, you get away from those people.”

Joel, on racism in the industry: “When you’re faced with it, too, with social media, like what happened recently with Michael B. Jordan in Fantastic Four [who played a character who is white in the comic] — people actively being racist, making those sort of comments about Star Wars [casting a black star]. Some of it is very, very alarming.”
