Sara Bareilles Explains Why She Decided to Star in 'Waitress'

Sara Bareilles is gearing up to make her Broadway debut in the musical Waitress next weekend and she’s opening up about why she decided to star in the show she helped write.

The Grammy-nominated singer appeared alongside her future co-stars Will Swenson and Chris Diamantopoulos at a cast meet and greet on Thursday (March 23) in New York City.

“There was just a perfect storm of things that lined up,” Sara told Variety about taking over for Tony-nominated actress Jessie Mueller.

“I had originally thought that this year would get dedicated to making my next record, and I had gone into the songwriting process. And then when we got the news that Jessie was moving on, I hadn’t made a lot of headway with my own record yet and I was still sort of holding space for this show in a strange way,” Sara said. “It just felt like this was the time. I’m as close to the show as I’ll ever be. My friends are in the show. The band is the original band. Lots of things are still very similar to how it was created, and I feel like that’s the show I want to be in.”

Catch Sara in the show from March 31 until June 11 and watch a sneak peek at rehearsals below!

Audra McDonald and her husband Will Swenson have welcomed their first child together: a baby girl named Sally James!

“Will and I are overjoyed to welcome Sally James McDonald-Swenson, named for Will’s late mother, Sally, and my late father, Stanley James. Our hearts are bursting and our lives forever changed,” Audra wrote on her Instagram, along with her little one’s feet.

Audra took a leave of absence from her Broadway show Shuffle Along back in July, and also postponed going to London for her show Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill because of the pregnancy.

Congrats to the happy couple on the wonderful news!

Broadway Star Audra McDonald Pregnant, Expecting Baby with Husband Will Swenson!

Audra McDonald just announced that she’s expecting a baby with her husband Will Swenson!

The 45-year-old six-time Tony award winning actress announced the news in a statement, via Playbill, that read, “Who knew that tap dancing during perimenopause could lead to pregnancy? Will and I are completely surprised—and elated—to be expecting a new addition to our family. I am so very grateful to everyone in New York and London for allowing me to rearrange my schedule to accommodate this little miracle. While I’m disappointed I have to postpone my West End debut in Lady Day, I’m glad I’ll be able to spend a little more time in Shuffle Along this summer and will look forward to setting up a 1920s-themed nursery in my dressing room when I return to the show.”

Audra will take a leave from Shuffle Along, her current Broadway show, beginning July 24. In addition, Audra was supposed to bring her Tony-winning performance from Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill to London. This production has been postponed as well.

Both Audra and Will have children from previous relationships. This will be their first child together after marrying in 2012. Congrats!
