Spain has emerged victorious!
The Spanish team defeated England’s Lionesses to win the women’s soccer World Cup on Sunday (August 20) in Melbourne, Australia.
Spain won 1-0, thanks to a first half goal by Olga Carmona, despite England feeling like the favorites to win.
Spain won the World Cup despite leaving out 12 players who had complained about manager Jorge Vilda’s conduct, including goalkeeper Sandra Paños, defender Mapi Leon and midfielder Patricia Guijarro. In late September of last year, 15 members of Spain’s senior women’s squad sent personally signed letters to the RFEF via email to announce they would no longer play for the national team unless there were major changes made throughout the coaching staff, via CNN.
They came back from a 4-0 defeat to Japan by beating Switzerland 5-1, before winning against the Netherlands and then Sweden.
