Spain Defeats England's Lionesses, Wins Women's World Cup 2023

Spain has emerged victorious!

The Spanish team defeated England’s Lionesses to win the women’s soccer World Cup on Sunday (August 20) in Melbourne, Australia.

Spain won 1-0, thanks to a first half goal by Olga Carmona, despite England feeling like the favorites to win.

Spain won the World Cup despite leaving out 12 players who had complained about manager Jorge Vilda’s conduct, including goalkeeper Sandra Paños, defender Mapi Leon and midfielder Patricia Guijarro. In late September of last year, 15 members of Spain’s senior women’s squad sent personally signed letters to the RFEF via email to announce they would no longer play for the national team unless there were major changes made throughout the coaching staff, via CNN.

They came back from a 4-0 defeat to Japan by beating Switzerland 5-1, before winning against the Netherlands and then Sweden.

On Saturday (August 19), Prince William and Princess Charlotte took to social media to wish England’s women’s soccer team good luck ahead of their upcoming World Cup final against Spain. Find out what they said.

As for the U.S. women’s national team, Megan Rapinoe has decided to retire after 17 years as a professional soccer player.

The U.S. women’s national team lost to Sweden in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup, crashing out of the competition over the weekend on Sunday (August 6).

Despite the U.S. having the advantage in possession and chances created, goalkeeper Zećira Mušović prevented USWNT players Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan from advancing. The game remained scoreless at full time and again after extra time, until Sweden advanced 5–4 on penalty kicks to move on to the quarterfinals.

This round-of-16 loss is the worst World Cup finish for the USWNT. Previously, third place was the U.S.’s worst finish, via Sports Illustrated.

Iran‘s national soccer team did not song the country’s national anthem before their opener against England at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on Monday (November 21) at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

It is believed that the team did not sing the anthem as an act of protest against the death of Mahsa Amini back in September, a 22-year-old woman arrested for not wearing the state-mandated headdress, a hijab, for women.

Protests have continued to increase in Iran following her death, and it appears the national team is also joining in the effort.
