Alexandra Shipp Addresses Critics Questioning Whether Her Skin Is Dark Enough to Play Storm in 'X-Men'

Alexandra Shipp is speaking out in the August 2018 issue of Glamour, out now.

Here’s what the 26-year-old X-Men star had to say…

On being vocal as an artist: “Male actors have always been able to be way more opinionated when it comes to politics. As actresses, we only get to do things like help the hungry children. Take Angelina Jolie. She’s political in her actions, but you don’t know her opinion on Trump. I think people should speak their truth. I don’t give a f–k. I’m me. I’m exactly who I want to be every single day. I know it might be my demise—I’ll check back in with you in a couple years and see how it’s working out—but I’m my own artist, and you can’t be a great artist without having a huge opinion.”

On responding to critics who questioned her skin color: “”[I tweeted back] at people who criticized me for not having dark enough skin for my role in X-Men because we’re not going to have this conversation about a cartoon character. You’re not going to tell me that my skin color doesn’t match a Crayola from 1970. Growing up, when I was reading the comics, I pictured her looking like me. For any black girl, for there to be a black superhero, we picture them looking like us.”

On speaking up: “The time is up for people in this industry being opinionless. If I was sitting here giving you all the answers you wanted to hear, keeping my political [beliefs] to myself, I would be acting. And that would be a really boring interview.”

Hugh Jackman Won't Play Wolverine Again, Despite Possible Disney & Fox Merger

Hugh Jackman shares a laugh with Logan director James Mangold at a lunch to celebrate their movie on Monday (December 11) at The Whitby Hotel in New York City.

The guys were joined for the event by Patrick Stewart.

Hugh has said that Logan was his last time playing the Wolverine character, but he also has said in the past that he would love to play Wolverine in an Avengers movie if a deal ever was worked out between Disney and Fox. Well, now there are talks about the two studios merging, so the X-Men characters potentially can join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together,” Hugh said in a new interview with Collider. “And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline – it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously – I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

Mel B Channels X-Men's Mystique in Sheer, Sequined Bodysuit!

Mel B is totally reminding us of the character Mystique from X-Men with her outfit for the America’s Got Talent live show on Tuesday (August 15) in Los Angeles.

The 42-year-old entertainer wore a see-though bodysuit with blue sequins and jewels that kept her covered up in all the right places.

Comedian Preacher Lawson, a contestant on the current season, commented on the look and said how much he enjoyed the outfit!

There were several instances during the episode where Mel addressed her split from husband Stephen Belafonte and she joked that she should have gotten a prenup.

Rosario Dawson Exits 'New Mutants,' Alice Braga Replaces Her

Alice Braga has joined the cast of the upcoming X-Men spin-off movie New Mutants in the role that originally went to Rosario Dawson.

It’s not clear right now why Rosario left the project, but this would have been her second Marvel role after her work in Netflix’s Luke Cage and Daredevil.

Alice will play “Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on,” according to THR. Also in the cast are Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Henry Zaga. New Mutants is set to be released on April 13, 2018.

You might recognize Alice from her work in the movies Elysium, Predators, and I Am Legend. She also appears on the USA series Queen of the South.
