Disney's 'Zootopia' Topped The Box Office This Weekend - Four Years After It Was First Released

Zootopia, which was released in 2016, topped the weekend box office, according to Deadline.

The site says that the animated film brought in an estimated $280,000 through drive-ins and movie theaters which are still open. Meanwhile, 2012′s Avengers placed in second with an estimated $260,000.

Deadline also stays that about 1,100 theaters remain running during the time of the pandemic, “with drive-ins still numbering 300 and driving the bulk of the weekend’s ticket sales.”

Zootopia centered on Judy Hopps, who becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, and quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy teams up with Nick Wilde, a fox who makes her job even harder.

The film won the 2017 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

The movie seems especially timely given the undertones of racism between animal species. This mirrors the Black Lives Matter uproar and protests that are taking place across the country.

Just recently, Shakira, who stars as Gazelle in the movie, recreated her look from the movie at the Super Bowl!

Shakira's Super Bowl Outfit Was the Same as Her 'Zootopia' Character's Outfit!

Shakira rocked the stage during the 2020 Super Bowl and if you thought her outfit looked a little familiar, you weren’t wrong.

The 43-year-old singer wore a sparkly red outfit that kept losing layers throughout the performance and at one point, it looked strikingly similar to the outfit worn by her character in the Disney animated movie Zootopia!

Shakira voiced the role of Gazelle, a famous singer who uses her voice to promote peace in Zootopia. The animal wore a sparkly red crop top and skirt with matching boots – just like Shakira at the Super Bowl.

Zootopia hit theaters in March 2016 and was a smash hit, grossing over $1.02 billion worldwide. There have been talks of a sequel happening in the future, though nothing has been confirmed just yet.
