Michelle Carter Wins Team USA's First Gold in Women's Shot Put

Michelle Carter just won a gold medal in the shot put event at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics!

The 30-year-old athlete’s accomplishment marks the first time that Team USA has ever won a gold medal in the women’s event.

The last time that a female athlete even took the podium in the was 1960 when Earlene Brown claimed bronze.

Michelle, who is also a makeup artist and nicknamed the “Shot Diva,” is the daughter of Michael Carter who was the 1984 Olympic shot put silver medalist.

Her win came as a surprise, as she was up against New Zealand’s Valerie Adams who won gold at the last two Olympics but took home the silver this time.
