AJR Spill On Their New Album, Favorite Artists & What's Next (Exclusive)

AJR is a band on the rise following the release of their sophomore album The Click!

The group – comprised of brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met – have been playing music together since they were kids.

Just Jared exclusively sat down with the group while they celebrated their new album at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

The band opened up about life on the road, their favorite musicians and what’s coming next. Here’s what AJR had to say:

Give us the scoop on the new album:

Adam: “We worked on this album for two years because we had a very specific intention behind the album. We wanted to write about real issues in a way people hadn’t thought about. So each of the songs has a kind of ‘I can relate to that but I hadn’t really thought about it in that way’ moment. Like there are so many songs on the radio about being strong and confident but our single ‘Weak’ takes a different approach, saying, ‘We’re weak and what’s wrong with that?’”

What are your tour bus essentials?

Jack: “This tour is our first time on a tour bus! We have a Wii. We didn’t grow up with video games so when we got old enough we bought our own Wii and we’re obsessed with playing Mario Kart. It’s what we do all day. And food? String cheese. We need it at all times. Wii and string cheese.”

What places are you most excited to stop on tour?

Ryan: “It’s always interesting to see what markets get the most hype. For some reason, Salt Lake City, everyone really goes crazy. Indianapolis too! And Portland too, because that’s a great music town.”

What else are you passionate about?

Ryan: “We’re really into film and we direct a lot of our own videos and all of our behind-the-scenes videos. We’re actually at Columbia University right now to study film because that’s also something we want to do someday.”

Who are some artists you’re into right now?

Jack: “We just tweeted about this guy! His name is Michael Blume. He’s super unknown and he’s just coming up now but we like to find artists with a similar sound to us. Those are the artists we get attached to and he has a great sound. We also brought this girl name Samia on tour with us…she sings a lot of the female vocals on our songs. She’s an unbelievable singer/songwriter.”

What’s next now that the album has dropped?

Ryan: “What’s so cool is that as our album is getting big, it allows for a lot of collaborations. Our album isn’t really in a certain lane – you wouldn’t call it pop or rock or alternative…so we have a lot of different collaborations and people in different lanes reaching out to us…We have a bunch of EDM collaborations and a hip hop collaboration coming out!”
