Susan Sarandon Talks Charlottesville with Jimmy Fallon: 'We Have To Admit That This Is A Systemic Problem'

Susan Saradon made an appearance on The Tonight Show on Monday (August 14) and had an open discussion with host Jimmy Fallon about the white supremacist rally that occurred over the weekend in Charlottesville.

“I think we have to own it and I think we have to admit that this is a systemic problem,” the 70-year-old actress told Jimmy. “This country was founded on a genocide of Native Americans and on the backs of slaves, and I don’t think we’ve ever really dealt with that. So this is something that goes very deep and, as you said with your daughters, you have to teach hate, they don’t come out that way. So I think that the way you deal with it is to do as much as you can.”

Susan also mentioned Heather Heyer, the woman who tragically died after an alleged white supremacist drove his car into a crowd during the riot. “On her last post, Heather said, ‘If you aren’t outraged, then you’re not paying attention,’ and I think this is an amazing opportunity for people to pay attention and to have these conversations,” Susan continued.
