Dolce & Gabbana Cancels China Fashion Show Amid Backlash

The Dolce&Gabbana fashion show scheduled to take place in China on Wednesday (November 21) was canceled just hours ahead of the event after backlash against the label and designer Stefano Gabbana.

The brand billed the show as a “tribute to China,” but there has been backlash against some marketing materials, including a social media video series titled “Eating With Chopsticks.”

The videos were deleted from the Dolce&Gabbana account on Chinese social media platform Weibo, though Gabbana allegedly was against the decision, according to alleged direct messages he sent to an Instagram user. The alleged messages defended the videos and called the Chinese press, “China Ignorant Dirty Smelling Mafia.”

Dolce&Gabbana released a statement saying that their Instagram account and also Gabbana‘s Instagram account were hacked and the messages were not sent by them.

Many of the models hired to walk in the fashion show announced that they would be boycotting it.

After canceling the fashion show altogether, the brand released this statement: “Our dream was to bring to Shanghai a tribute event dedicated to China which tells our history and vision. It was not simply a fashion show, but something that we created especially with love and passion for China and all the people around the world who loves Dolce & Gabbana. What happened today was very unfortunate not only for us, but also for all the people who worked day and night to bring this event to life. From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to express our gratitude to our friends and guests. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.”
