Meet Broadway's Rashidra Scott, Who Blows 'Ain't Too Proud' Audiences Away with a One-Minute Solo!

The new musical Ain’t Too Proud is currently playing on Broadway and while the show focuses on the men of The Temptations, actress Rashidra Scott leaves a lasting impact on the audience.

Rashidra is a Broadway veteran who has appeared in such shows as Avenue Q, Hair, Sister Act, and Beautiful. Now, she’s playing Josephine, the wife of the Temptations’ Otis Williams.

In one scene, she gets a one-minute solo on the song “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and she blows the roof off the theatre with her powerful vocals. You can listen to the song from the cast recording right here.

We caught up with Rashidra to learn more about her. Check out 10 Fun Facts below!

  • 1. I’m a former pageant girl. I competed in my first talent-based pageant at five and finished competing in the Miss America Organization (MA and VA), placing 3rd runner up in VA in my last year of competition.
  • 2. I have a BM in Music Business/Management from Berklee College of Music in Boston.
  • 3. My father is from Trinidad and I have three siblings- fraternal twin brother & sister and a younger sister (10 and 12 years younger than me).
  • 4. I lived in Hong Kong for almost one year as part of the opening team for Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 5. The first song my mom ever heard me sing was Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All.” I now am the lead vocalist for Windborne’s “Music of Whitney Houston” symphony show.

  • 6. As a latchkey kid, I used to perform the entire Dreamgirls cast album by myself, including full staging of the firing of Jimmy (playing all three parts and walking out of my room on myself cause “I got a show to do”).
  • 7. I was born in Norfolk, VA and raised in Virginia Beach.
  • 8. I won a local talent show run by Teddy Riley at 12 singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero”
  • 9. I went to Disney World and watched “Tarzan Rocks!” with my family and told my mom that one day I’d end up doing that show (I had just graduated high school). At the end of the show I found the call booth and asked the stage manager how to find out about auditions for the show. Four years later I auditioned for and got cast in the show.
  • 10. At my first childhood voice lesson my voice teacher’s initial statement was “we gotta get that man outta your voice.” She gave me songs to stretch my upper register and I decided that it should work for my low range, as well, so I’d walk around singing the bass line to Boyz II Men’s “Yesterday.” (In my mind I’m a 3rd cover for Melvin Franklin in the show haha)
  • Bonus: I do a Britney Spears vocal impression.
