Iran Attacks U.S. Forces at Iraqi Bases in 'Revenge' for Soleimani's Death

Iran has attacked two Iraqi bases holding U.S. forces in “revenge” for top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani‘s death.

Iran has launched over a dozen missiles at the Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops, seemingly in retaliation for the American airstrike that killed Soleimani last week in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the Pentagon said Tuesday (January 7), CNN reports.

There were reportedly no initial U.S. casualties, but an assessment is still underway. There are reported casualties amongst the Iraqis at Ain al-Asad airbase, though the number of casualties and extent of injuries is unclear.

White House aides are reportedly planning a possible address to the nation by President Donald Trump.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), an elite branch of the Iranian military, said in a statement that the attacks were “hard revenge” for Soleimani‘s death. They added that any country housing U.S. troops could be “[subject to] hostile and aggressive acts,” asking American citizens to urge the government to take U.S. troops out of the region.

“To the Great Satan … we warn that if you repeat your wickedness or take any additional movements or make additional aggression, we will respond with more painful and crushing responses,” the statement to the U.S. read.
