Mark Ruffalo Admits He Was Scared About Joining ‘Avengers’ as The Hulk

Mark Ruffalo was once hesitant about joining the Marvel Universe and playing The Hulk in the Avengers franchise.

However, the 52-year-old actor revealed that it was co-star Robert Downey, Jr., who convinced him he could do it.

“I was scared,” Mark confessed to Jimmy Fallon during a The Tonight Show appearance, airing tonight, May 8 (via People).

He continued, “I didn’t know what I could add to what I already thought had been done so well before me.”

Mark talked more about his hesitation, revealing that he was only doing “indie movies up ’til that point. So I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m the right person for this.’ And Joss Whedon’s like, yeah, you are the right person.'”

“Then I got a call from Downey, it must’ve made it to him that I was hemming and hawing, and he just simply said, ‘Ruffalo, let’s go. We got this.’ In true Iron Man fashion. And then after that, I was like, ‘I guess I have to do it.'”

If you missed it, Mark previously pitched a stand alone Hulk movie.
