Kristen Bell is 'Happy to Relinquish' Her Role of Molly on 'Central Park' to Black Actress
Kristen Bell is reacting to news that she is being re-cast on Central Park.
Earlier on Tuesday (June 24), it was announced that she will no longer be voicing the character a Molly, a biracial teenager on the Apple TV+ animated series. The show also vowed to re-cast her with a Black or mixed race actress.
Kristen is now breaking her silence on the re-cast, saying that playing Molly was an act of complicity that showed a “lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege.”
“This is a time to acknowledge our acts of complicity. Here is one of mine,” Kristen wrote on her social media accounts. “Playing the character of Molly on Central Park shows a lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege. Casting a mixed race character with a white actress undermines the specificity of the mixed race and Black American experience.”
She continued: “It was wrong and we, on the Central Park team, are pledging to make it right. I am happy to relinquish this role to someone who can give a much more accurate portrayal and I will commit to learning, growing and doing my part for equality and inclusion.”
News of Kristen‘s re-cast comes just after Jenny Slate stepped back from her own role in Big Mouth as Missy.
