Hal Holbrook has sadly died at the age of 95.

The legendary actor was best known for playing American novelist Mark Twain in the solo show Mark Twain Tonight, which he first began performing in 1954. Not only did he perform in the show, he also wrote and directed the play as well.

Holbrook won the Tony Award for Best Actor for his work in 1966 and later returned to Broadway to reprise his role in 1977 and 2005. He appeared in the show more than 2,200 times over the years.

In his film and television career, Holbrook won four Emmy Awards for various roles and he was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for his work in the film Into the Wild. At the time, he was the oldest actor to ever be nominated for an Oscar.

Holbrook was married three times. He married actress Dixie Carter in 1984 and they remained married until her death from cancer in 2010.

We’re sending our thoughts and condolences to Holbrook‘s loved ones during this difficult time.
