Meghan Markle Opens Up About the First Time She Ever Met Prince Harry's Grandmother, Queen Elizabeth

Meghan Markle is taking us back in time!

During the first several minutes in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, the 39-year-old Duchess revealed that one of the first people she met in now-husband Prince Harry‘s family was his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

We were going to lunch at Royal Lodge, where members of the family live, specifically [Prince] Andrew and Fergie [aka Sarah FergusonFerguson], usually [Princesses] Eugenie and Beatrice would spend a lot of time there. And Eugenie and I had known each other before I had known Harry so that was comfortable and were were friends with them as a couple,” Meghan shared. “And it turns out the Queen was finishing a church service there in Windsor, so she was going to be at the house.”

“And I remember, Harry and I were in the car, and he goes, ‘My grandmother is here, so you’re going to meet her,’” Meghan recalled. “And I said, ‘Oh great! I love grandparents, I loved my grandmother, I used to take care of my grandmother – this is great.’”

“And he goes, ‘Do you know how to curtsy?’ And I said, ‘What?’” Meghan shared. “And I thought that was generally what happened, outside, I thought that was part of the fanfare – I didn’t think that was what happened inside.”

“And Harry said, ‘It’s the Queen.’ And that was really the first time, the penny dropped and I realized what I was getting in to,” Meghan shared.

Meghan then went on to share that after they arrived at the house, she practiced curtsying outside with Harry before they went in to meet Queen Elizabeth.

“And we went inside, and apparently I did a very deep curtsy,” Meghan said with a laugh.

“And it was very lovely and easy,” Meghan said of her time with the Queen. “And thank God I hadn’t known a lot about the family, and thank God I didn’t researched about all of it.”

Meghan then explained that, while she was growing up in Los Angeles, she had encountered and bumped into celebrities all the time, but she emphasized to Oprah that meeting the celebrities is nothing like meeting the British Royal Family.
