Amanda Seyfried Wants to Play Glinda in 'Wicked' Movie, Reveals Her Elphaba Choice

Amanda Seyfried is opening up about her desire to play Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie and her choice to play the other lead role of Elphaba.

The 35-year-old actress did an interview with Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast to promote her Oscar-nominated work in the movie Mank.

Amanda said she has already sent a clip of herself singing “Popular” to Jon M. Chu, who was recently announced as the movie’s director.

“I’ve been campaigning for Wicked for five years,” she said, adding that she has been taking voice lessons and practicing the song. “I’ve never been more ready to hit those notes.”

Amanda talked about her choice to play Elphaba and it came down to her Les Miserables co-stars Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks.

“For a while it was Anna Kendrick, because I thought that her Elphaba would be really solid, and, you know, I sing the high notes and she can sing, she can be the alto,” she said. “At one point, it was Anne Hathaway, too. She could obviously be Elphaba.”

Samantha was always her original choice though. She said, “There’s nobody else like Samantha Barks… Samantha is my No. 1, I mean, there’s no better singer in the world I think.”

On making the Wicked the movie, she said, “There’s things that you will always be attached to and want to do, no matter how old you get, but if they still haven’t made Wicked by the time I’m 50, then fine I’ll let it go.”
