Andrew Yang Gets Emotional When Defending His Decision to Rehome His Dog

Andrew Yang is responding to criticism about rehoming his dog.

The 46-year-old politician came under fire on Sunday (April 11) after tweeting a photo of his former dog, Grizzly, on National Pet Day.

He explained in the tweets that he and his wife Evelyn had to give Grizzly away due to one of their sons developing an allergy to the dog.

“On #NationalPetsDay celebrating our dog Grizzly who we raised as a puppy but had to give away because one of our boys became allergic to him. Miss you Grizz!” he wrote.

Users in Andrew‘s replies were confused by his decision to post a photo of the dog if he no longer lives with the family and questioned his decision to rehome Grizzly.

In a video shared by the New York Post, the former presidential candidate became emotional when talking about the dog during a press conference.

“That still hurts,” he said and shared that he was initially “in denial” that the dog was causing his son Christopher‘s severe allergic reactions.

“There was one night when Christopher had a respiratory attack… And that’s when I knew we had to give our dog away,” Andrew said as he teared up.

Grizzly currently lives with close family friends in California who “pamper him more than me and Evelyn did,” according to Andrew.

As for why he decided to post about Grizzly even though the dog no longer lives with them, Andrew said Grizzly is “still our pet in our hearts.”

“I didn’t really think anything of it,” he said. “Grizzly meant the world to me and the family.”

A few weeks ago, one actor criticized Andrew‘s response to the increase in racial hostility towards Asians during the pandemic.
