'Lord of the Rings' Amazon Series to Be Most Expensive TV Show Ever Made - See the Estimated Cost!

The Lord of the Rings is going to be huge.

The forthcoming fantasy series at Amazon Studios will cost even more than previous estimates, THR reported Friday (April 16).

Amazon will spend roughly NZ$650 million, or $465 million in U.S. dollars, for the first season of the show, according to the report, beating out the previous estimate of $500 million for multiple seasons of the show.

“What I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone. This is fantastic, it really is…this will be the largest television series ever made,” said Stuart Nash, New Zealand Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, to Morning Report.

The estimate was released as part of the New Zealand government’s Official Information Act, initially reported by Stuff.

The documents also revealed that Amazon plans to film five seasons in New Zealand, as well as potential spinoff series.

HBO’s Game of Thrones cost roughly $100 million per season, and ran about $6 million an episode for season one up to approximately $15 million per episode in season eight.

Amazon got the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien‘s iconic franchise in 2017.

Here’s an official description of the show: The Lord of the Rings “brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien‘s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

There are dozens of big names in the cast – find out who is set to star! One star is no longer involved in the massive production.

The series is currently in production and expected to debut later in 2021.
