NBC News' Kristen Welker Expecting Her First Child with Husband John Hughes!

NBC News chief White House correspondent Kristen Welker and her husband John Hughes are going to be parents.

The 44-year-old TV journalist announced the exciting news on the Today Show on Friday (April 23).

“After years and years of trying, I’m having a baby girl with John and we are so excited,” Kristen said. “It’s with the help of a surrogate.”

She added that she wanted to share the news during Infertility Awareness Week in an effort to give others hope.

“I was 40 years old when I married John in March 2017. And we immediately started to try to have a baby,” Kristen said. “It didn’t work immediately. So we thought, ‘Let’s just go to a doctor as a precaution.’”

When her fertility specialist recommended in vitro fertilization, commonly referred to as IVF, Kristen was optimistic.

“First round of IVF, it went really well and I thought, ‘I’m going to be pregnant within the next few months, no problem,’” she explained.

Kristen was then informed that the lining of her uterus was too thin to carry a child and begun undergoing treatment in order to improve her likelihood of becoming pregnant.

After two difficult years, Kristen came to the conclusion that she should explore other options, which ultimately led them to surrogacy.

“Being matched with a surrogate is one of the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had,” Kristen said.

“Our surrogate has been amazing,” John agreed. “I can’t explain just how wonderful she’s been. For her this was about giving something to us that she felt a deep connection to.”

Kristen also revealed that she knew the surrogate was pregnant when she moderated the presidential debate during the election and credited the baby for helping her stay so calm during the event.
