'Nomadland' Is the Lowest-Grossing Best Picture Winner in Oscars History

An interesting- though not completely surprising statistic – from the 2021 Academy Awards is about the best picture winner, Nomadland.

The film not only won Best Picture, but also for Best Actress for Frances McDormand, and Best Director for ChloƩ Zhao.

Nomadland was released during the pandemic, and thus, only grossed about $2.5 million to $3 million at the domestic box office, THR reports. Thus, the film is the lowest-grossing Best Picture Oscar winner of all time. The pandemic caused so many theaters to shut down and the film was not able to be viewed in theaters by the masses. It was instead released in select theaters and streamed on Hulu.

The previous title holder, The Hurt Locker, had earned roughly $11 million at the time of its Best Picture win in 2009.
