The Weeknd Will Still Boycott The Grammys Despite Disbanding Of Secret Committees

Over the weekend, the trustees of the Recording Academy voted Friday (April 30) to disband nominations review committees and let Grammy voters have the final say in all non-craft categories.

The decision came after The Weeknd criticized The Grammys earlier this year, after his album, After Hours, failed to secure any nominations.

The secret committees, for years, had determined who the nominees would be for major categories.

The Recording Academy added that the categories would now be “determined by a majority, peer-to-peer vote of voting members of the Recording Academy.”

However, The Weeknd is still boycotting the show.

“Even though I won’t be submitting my music, the Grammys’ recent admission of corruption will hopefully be a positive move for the future of this plagued award and give the artist community the respect it deserves with a transparent voting process,” he told The New York Times in a statement.

He also talked with Variety about the Grammys move and revealed why he was still boycotting future shows.

“The trust has been broken for so long between the Grammy organization and artists that it would be unwise to raise a victory flag,” he shared.

The Weeknd continued, “I think the industry and public alike need to see the transparent system truly at play for the win to be celebrated, but it’s an important start. I remain uninterested in being a part of the Grammys, especially with their own admission of corruption for all these decades. I will not be submitting in the future.”

His manager, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, also spoke about the decision, saying that, “No change comes without a voice heard. I’m just proud of Abel for standing up for what he believes in. I was in a shock when all this happened but now I see it clearly, and I’m glad we stood for our beliefs.”

The Weeknd‘s boycott of the show inspired others to call out the show as well.
