Get to Know Rising Indie Queer Duo Boyish With These 10 Fun Facts! (Exclusive)

Boyish is one of the rising acts on the music scene we’re excited about, and Just Jared wants readers to get a chance to exclusively get to know them even better!

The Brooklyn-based indie queer duo, made up of singer-songwriter India Shore and guitarist Claire Altendahl, first met at Berklee College of Music. They began to work under the name The Blue, releasing their debut album Carnation in 2018, before changing their name to Boyish after graduating college in 2019 and releasing their follow-up Garden Spider last February.

On Friday (May 28), the group released their brand new EP, We’re all gonna die but here’s my contribution, which includes their new single “Howls,” inspired by 2004′s Howl’s Moving Castle.

“We wanted it to feel sonically like we were in the meadow with Howl as he eats a fallen star,” they said of the song.

“The EP’s name came from the question of ‘what am I contributing to this world?’ We realized that life is very temporary but this EP is what we have to give and it will be stuck somewhere on the Internet forever. We had a lot of time for self-reflection and wrote our most honest music to date. We were so nostalgic at the time and every memory seemed to have extra weight to it, which we tried to translate into each song.”

The release also includes three tracks – “whatshisname”, “Superstar” and “Your Best Friend” – which draw inspiration from everything from Claire’s quarantine job in a landscaping supply yard to an infatuation for a celebrity.

Claire

1. I am a certified forklift operator after working in a landscape supply yard last summer.
2. I love dogs so much. I have a Golden Retriever named Leo who just turned 8. He has listened to us work on every Boyish song from the beginning stages to the final mix and I can always tell his favorite song because he will wag his tail after.
3. My dad is a musician and I grew up wanting to play in his band. We still gig together to this day at vineyards and bars.
4. I still collect CDs! I started in high school when my car only had a CD player and I haven’t stopped.
5. I love boats and my favorite day of the year is the boat show convention in Minneapolis.

India

1. I was a competitive gymnast growing up, until I was 16.
2. I went to LaGuardia high school for performing arts.
3. Claire and I started a band so we could get free burritos.
4. I am a die hard One Direction stan, I will never stop loving them.
5. I failed my permit test and have yet to get a license :)
