There's a Conflicting Report About Why John Boyega Suddenly Left Netflix's 'Rebel Ridge' In the Middle of Production

Earlier this month, a report emerged saying John Boyega had suddenly exited his Netflix film Rebel Ridge in the middle of filming.

At the time, Netflix released a statement saying, “Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons. We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone in which he also stars.”

Now, a new report is emerging suggesting there are different reasons why John stepped away from the project while it was weeks into filming, which is allegedly unprecedented in the industry.

According to sources who spoke to THR, John “had myriad issues ranging from the script to his accommodations.” Another source alleged that John never actually informed anyone that he was exiting the project and the filmmakers only found out when they went to look for him at his hotel and discovered he had checked out.

Apparently, Netflix execs such as co-CEO Ted Sarandos tried to get him to stay. Crew members had to be let go and Netflix is apparently hopeful they can re-cast John‘s role and pick back up again next year.

John‘s agent, Femi Oguns, is categorically denying this report. Oguns wrote in an email, “I can categorically say that these rumours are completely untrue. People will form their opinions often rooted from boredom. As stated John unfortunately left due to family reasons which in truth is none of anyone’s business except his own. John and Netflix have a wonderful relation which will continue to grow for years to come whether that be through his acting or through [Boyega’s production company] UpperRoom.”

John received so much support one year ago when he expressed his career may be over due to his participation in the Black Lives Matter protests.
