Serena Williams Is Not Going to Play at Tokyo Olympics 2021 & Will Not Reveal Why

Serena Williams is skipping out on the Olympics.

The 39-year-old athlete will not be appearing at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, she confirmed Sunday (June 27).

“I’m actually not on the Olympic list – not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be on it,” she explained during a press conference.

“There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision. I don’t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry,” she went on to say.

However, she did say recently that if she couldn’t bring her daughter to the games, she likely would not attend. Japan’s current COVID-19 restrictions are limiting to who can enter into the country at the moment.

She is not the only star to drop out: Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem also revealed they will not attend.

Serena also weighed in about another athlete dropping out of a competition.
