Jack Whitehall Opens Up About His Important Coming Out Scene in 'Jungle Cruise'

Jack Whitehall is opening up about a pivotal scene for his character in Jungle Cruise.

The 33-year-old actor portrays McGregor, Lily’s (Emily Blunt) brother in the movie, and comes out to Dwayne Johnson‘s skipper, Frank.

During the red carpet premiere over the weekend, Jack talked about the importance of the scene for the flick.

Jack previously explained that his “character is McGregor” and “he is a sort of well-heeled, upper class English gentleman who doesn’t really want to be there, looks down his nose a bit at the rustic accommodation, very well dressed, dry sense of humor.”

While speaking to Variety about the coming out scene, Jack admits that when he “first read the script, there was only a like a couple of sides, [and] there wasn’t any indication of that. It was quite a long casting process.”

In the scene, McGregor comes out to the skipper, Frank, and while he doesn’t use the word “gay,” he says he broke off three engagements with women because his “interests happily lay elsewhere.”

Frank then raises a drink to toast “elsewhere.”

“I think it was a really well-written scene, and one that we certainly thought about and talked about,” Jack added. “I hope that it’s a scene that audiences enjoy … I certainly felt at the time that I was proud of the work that we’d done.”

Jungle Cruise will open in theaters on Friday, July 30, and also stream on Disney+ Premier Access the same day.
