Alicia Vikander Addresses The Criticism of 'Danish Girl' Six Years After The Film Came Out

Alicia Vikander is looking back on Danish Girl, the film in which she starred opposite Eddie Redmayne and earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

In a recent interview, the 32-year-old actress opened up about the criticism the movie faced when it was revealed Eddie, a cis actor, would be playing the part of a transgender woman.

Danish Girl centered on the “love story about Danish painters Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda. In 1930, Wegener was one of the first men ever to undergo operations to become a woman.”

Speaking to Insider, Alicia recalled making the film in 2015, and shared that it “was such a learning experience. I think Eddie did a wonderful job in the role.”

As for the backlash to Eddie playing the role of a transgender woman, Alicia says she does “understand the criticism that has been out there, because we need to make change and we need to make sure that trans men and women actually get a foot in and get work.”

“My only concern is that we may need to get to a point in the end where we have trans women and men playing cis characters. Because that is the main thing, you know?”

Eddie has previously addressed the backlash to him in the role, and told IndieWire that “it’s an incredibly important discussion. And I think it’s also representative of a lot of discrimination against trans people in the work place generally. I think there has been years of cisgender success on the back of trans stories…”

He added that he hoped that there’s “a day when there are more trans actors and trans actresses playing trans parts, but also cisgender parts. And I hope — as an actor one hopes — that one should be able to play any sort of part if one plays it with a sense of integrity and responsibility.”

Eddie has also opened up about the support he did receive from the trans community in playing the character.

Danish Girl is available for streaming on Netflix.
