'A League of Their Own' Almost Starred Debra Winger In Geena Davis's Role

Debra Winger has revealed that before Geena Davis starred as Dottie Hinson in A League of Their Own, it was originally slated for her.

However, the 66-year-old actress chose to depart the movie and is opening up about the reason why.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, Debra admitted she left the movie because Madonna was cast.

Before Madonna was cast though, Debra had spent months training with the Chicago Cubs to prep for the role.

“The studio agreed with me,” she shared, as she referred to the film as an Elvis movie, “because it was the only time I ever collected a pay-or-play on my contract. In other words, I collected my pay even though I did not play, and that’s very hard to get in a court.”

To prepare for the film, Debra met with the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), which the film was based on. But she didn’t think the movie did the ladies the proper justice.

“As entertaining as [the final film] was, you don’t walk away going ‘Wow, those women did that,’” she says. “You kind of go ‘Is that true?’”

Debra says that she doesn’t “begrudge any of” the actors who starred in the film though, and pointed out that Lori Petty did an amazing job as Kit.

But for Madonna, Debra says: “I think [her] acting career has spoken for itself.”
