Critics seem largely split on the movie, which currently commands a 40% Fresh rating across over two dozen professional reviews, via Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a negative review, and says “Cinderella buckles under the weight of its intentions, and not even its formidable cast – Menzel, Billy Porter, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan – can save it.”

Decider called the film “absurdly hilarious,” noting: “What [Kay] Cannon delivered is far better than what the internet has led you to assume. Don’t believe every tweet you read!”

Deadline said the movie was “a harmless confection,” noting: “It is interesting to see this new interpretation at this time, especially considering recent events in the Royal Family with Harry and Meghan and a rethinking of priorities in that regard. This Cinderella’s timing seems right on the money, and is a harmless confection (nothing more, nothing less) for the target audience and certainly Cabello fans, who get to see this charming performer branch out into new challenges, and meet them head on.”

Vulture was less impressed, saying the movie was “nothing to sing about,” and adding that the project is “hermetically sealed, predictable from the moment Cabello tries to play Ella as Beauty and the Beast’s Belle as if she is attempting a TikTok challenge.”

The Wrap said the movie traffics in “one-note girl boss feminism,” saying “bouncing from musical number to musical number, each scene showcases the incredible costume work but provides little substance or depth.”

The AV Club gave a more positive review, saying the film “has a comedic sensibility that sits somewhere between a self-referential modern day Disney princess flick and—unexpectedly enough—Hulu’s loopy historical dark comedy The Great.”

The Chicago Sun-Times also had good things to say, noting: “Cinderella is filled with positive messages for princes and princesses of all ages, the soundtrack is irresistible and Camila Cabello can now add ‘movie star’ to her resume.”

Camila Cabello revealed something happened to her during the premiere of the film in LA.
