Disney Announces New Release Strategy for Future Movies After 'Shang-Chi' Success

Disney has announced new plans for the rest of the movies on their slate this year.

It was expected that a lot of studios would move back to streaming strategies amid the surge of the Delta variant of COVID-19, but the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has led to a new strategy for Disney.

Most of the upcoming movies on Disney’s slate will be getting exclusive theatrical releases, though the amount of days they’ll spend in theaters will vary.

“Following the tremendous box office success of our summer films which included five of the top eight domestic releases of the year, we are excited to update our theatrical plans for the remainder of 2021,” Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution chairman Kareem Daniel said in a statement. “As confidence in moviegoing continues to improve, we look forward to entertaining audiences in theaters, while maintaining the flexibility to give our Disney+ subscribers the gift of Encanto this holiday season.”

Check out the release schedule below…

The Last Duel – October 15 – 45-day exclusive run

Ron’s Gone Wrong – October 22 – 45-day exclusive run

Eternals – November 5 – 45-day exclusive run

Encanto – November 24 – 30-day exclusive run and then going to Disney+

West Side Story – December 10 – 45-day exclusive run

The announcement stated that these films will run for a “minimum” of 45 days, which will give the studio leeway to extend the theatrical runs.
