Country Singer Alan Jackson Reveals He's Been Living With a Neurological Disease

Alan Jackson is opening up about living with a silent neurological disease.

The 62-year-old “Chattahoochee” country singer spoke to Jenna Bush Hager on Today, and revealed that he has been living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT).

The disease is closely related to “muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease,” Alan shared on the program.

“I have this neuropathy and neurological disease,” he started off. “It’s genetic that I inherited from my daddy…There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years.”

Alan went on, explaining that while it’s not deadly, it’s been affecting him more and more and contributes to his performances.

“It’s getting more and more obvious,” he said. “I know I’m stumbling around on stage. And now I’m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone, and so I just feel very uncomfortable.”

Despite living with it for over 10 years, Alan is determined to continue performing for his fans.

“I never wanted to do the big retirement tour, like people do, then take a year off and then come back,” he says. “I think that’s kinda cheesy. And I’m not saying I won’t be able to tour. I’ll try to do as much as I can.”

“I’ve always believed that the music is the most important thing. The songs,” Alan adds. “And I guess that’s what I’d like to (leave) if I had a legacy.”

Alan has been married to his wife, Denise, for 42 years. Together, they share three daughters: Mattie, Alexandra and Dani.
