The trial began in March of 2020, and was postponed for a year amid the pandemic.

Judge Mark E. Windham sentenced him to life, ruling that his guilt was proven beyond reasonable doubt in multiple ways.

The first-degree murder conviction and sentencing come more than six years after he arguably confessed to murdering Susan Berman and his wife, Kathy, on a hot mic during the filming of the documentary, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.

In the documentary, he can be heard muttering: “You’re caught…what the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.” He claims he was high on meth when he made the confession.

Kathy disappeared back in 1982, and it’s suspected he killed her, though she was never found and he was never charged. Kathy‘s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him.

Los Angeles County prosecutors sought to prove he killed Susan because she knew something about Kathy‘s death. Her body was found on Christmas Eve in 2000. Two days later, the LAPD received a letter telling cops where Susan‘s body could be found.

The case went cold, until it was reopened in the wake of the HBO documentary.

The sentencing comes nearly two decades after he stood trial for the 2001 murder of a Texas neighbor, in which he claimed he accidentally shot the neighbor in the forehead during a struggle. He was acquitted in 2003.
