Gwyneth Paltrow Reacts to Glenn Close Saying Her Oscar Win Didn't 'Make Sense'

Gwyneth Paltrow won the Best Actress award at the 1999 Oscars, but Glenn Close still doesn’t understand why she received the prize.

Now, Gwyneth is finally reacting to the comments that Glenn made last year.

While promoting her movie Hillbilly Elegy in November 2020, Glenn shared her thoughts on awards shows and how performances are compared to each other.

“I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets. And then, I’ve never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know?” Glenn said on ABC News’ Popcorn with Peter Travers. “I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in Central Station and I thought, ‘What?’ It doesn’t make sense.”

Fernanda Montenegro is the actress from Central Station. The other nominees in the category that yea were Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth, Meryl Streep for One True Thing, and Emily Watson for Hilary and Jackie.

Glenn added, “So I think who wins has a lot of things to do with how things have been, you know, whether it has traction or whatever. Publicity, how much money did they have to put it out in front of everybody’s sight… I have to be philosophical about it, if I was upset about it.”

Andy Cohen asked Gwyneth for her thoughts on the comments during a game of Plead the Fifth on Watch What Happens Live.

“I just heard this from you, Andy! I never heard about this,” Gwyneth said while laughing.

Andy asked her if she wanted to “plead the fifth” and move onto the next question. She said, “Well, I guess I have to because I don’t know enough about it. So I plead the fifth.”

You’ve gotta see the party favors that Gwyneth handed out at her party on Thursday night!
