Denis opened up about the recent announcement that a second Dune film had been greenlit by Warner Bros. and Legendary.

“I would say that… I was wishing [for the sequel,]” he said. “And I knew we had a good chance to be greenlit because we had done good the numbers in Europe, that Warner Brothers and Legendary loved the movie, loved the project.”

“But what was the nice surprise, what was the big joy for me was to see the numbers that came out from the weekend. How many people went to the theater and watching a movie on the big screen that really, really brought a lot of joy in my heart,” he continued.

As for what he had planned for the forthcoming sequel, the director said that there were a number of things he was hoping to include that didn’t make it in the first film.

“It’s such a rich universe,” Denis said. “There’s a lot of things that I wish had been in the movie that I had to make difficult choices [about]. But at the end of the day, it was to make sure that… the movie will have a momentum. The people that didn’t read the book will be able to understand the movie. People don’t need to read the book to enjoy the movie. That was one of the main goal and one of the main challenges.”

“I will say that Gurney Halleck, the character played by Josh Brolin, Gurney Halleck is famous for the way he plays the baliset, a string instrument, and he’s famous for the way he sings,” he shared.

“We had done this beautiful scene where Josh was singing and it was absolutely beautiful because Josh was feeling very vulnerable about the scene. And he was very generous and it was so beautiful, but that’s the scene that I had to cut because I was feeling it was not belonging to the first part. And I said, ‘Okay, I will save it for part two,” he said. “That was the one that was painful, because it’s also very in the DNA of that character… It was a bit sacrilegious to just cut it.”

Earlier this week, Denis seemingly addressed why Zendaya only had seven minutes of screen time in the film.
