'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Director Jason Reitman Reveals How He Got [SPOILER] To Play Gozer

Jason Reitman is opening up about that huge celeb cameo in the post credits scene for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The 44-year-old director of the movie, who took over the Ghostbusters reigns from his own dad, Ivan Reitman, chatted in a new interview about how the cameo came together for the personification of Gozer, who was first mentioned in the 1984 movie.

Gozer is actually an ancient entity from another universe who wreaks havoc on New York City in that first movie. Now, they returned after being heralded in the middle of Oklahoma, where Ivo Shandor had built a throne to worship it.

Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde stepped into the role of Gozer, after Jason reached out to her.

“I’ve known Olivia a long time, we’ve wanted to work with each other a long time. I don’t think we expected it to be in this format,” he told The Wrap in a recent interview.

Jason added that the proposition came up over a text: “I reached out to her like, ‘Hey, you wanna be Gozer?’ I just texted her, and she was down from the word ‘go’.”

He did note that Olivia was game for the role, even waking up “at the crack of dawn and be covered in prosthetics and makeup and have weird contact lenses put in your eyes. It’s a beast of a role, but she came at it with complete joy.”

Jason did add that professional dancer Emma Portner provided half of the performance of Gozer, as well, saying that “the body performance of the spirit of Gozer was Portner, who is absolutely extraordinary. She’s literally one of the great dancers alive and totally cool, and did a lot of that work out there in that dirt field.”
