Sandra recalled the actual moment she told Bryan, a photographer, about adopting their daughter Laila.

“I had Louis first. And then when I met him — and we hadn’t been together that long — I go, ‘Do you remember that NDA you signed when you photographed my son?’ … He was still scared, his whole life had been unraveled because of me,” she shared. “And I said, ‘You know that still holds.’ And he said, ‘Okay, why?’ And I was like, ‘Because I’m bringing a child home when I come back from Toronto.’ He was like, ‘Sorry what?’”

Sandra said that while taken back, “he was so happy, but he was scared. I’m a bulldozer…my life was already on the track and here’s this beautiful human being who doesn’t want anything to do with my life, but the right human being to be there to help me.”

She added that Bryan is the “right parent to be in this position.”

“I’m stubborn but sometimes I need to sit back and listen and go, ‘You’re saying it differently but we mean exactly the same thing,’” Sandra says. “It’s hard to co-parent because I just want to do it myself.”

When talk of marriage rumors between the two were brought up, Sandra said that she and Bryan don’t feel the need to have a piece of paper declaring their status to each other, or to anyone else.

“I am someone who went through the divorce process. I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children— three children, his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever,” she shared. “I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother.”

“I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man,” Sandra added. “So if that’s what you have…. Think about what kind of parent he would be. Think about what kind of parent you would be. And what if something happened? Would you both be great parents to those children even if you didn’t make it as a couple. Think about the children first.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Sandra opened up about being a white mom to black children.
