Steven Spielberg Reveals That 'Hook' Was Almost A Musical!

While chatting with The Guardian, Steven revealed that Hook was intended to be a musical in the first place, however, he had the feeling that it wasn’t time for him to take that on in his filmmaking career.

“I chickened out after the first week of shooting and took all the songs out,” Steven shared. “[...] It was the biggest paradigm shift I’ve ever had while directing a movie.”

He added that “it just didn’t seem right for some strange reason. Maybe I didn’t feel ready to do a musical. I was OK doing those little numbers in 1941 or Temple of Doom, and later there was a kind of zero-gravity dance to the Bee Gees in Ready Player One. I had a couple of false starts, too, with scripts that I began developing into original musicals. At some point, I decided I had to have the courage of my convictions.”

In another interview with ABC, Steven had opened up about how he knew he wanted to direct a version of West Side Story since he was 10.

“My parents bought the album, the original Broadway cast album for ‘West Side Story’ when I was about 10 years old,” he shared. “And I wore it out, and– memorized every song, and it was my favorite musical my entire life.”

West Side Story opens on December 10.
