The movie brought in just $10.5 million from 2,820 theaters, a far cry from the $100 million spent on creating the film. It also opened exclusively in theaters, and also sold fewer tickets in its initial weekend than In the Heights.

However, it’s possible that the movie may have a long run in theaters. For example, Chicago opened to $10 million and eventually went on to garner $170 million in North America. The Greatest Showman also only opened at $8.8 million, and went on to make $171 million.

The movie stars Ansel Elgort as Tony, Rachel Zegler as Maria, Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Rita Moreno as Valentina, Mike Faist as Riff, and more.

It tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. Steven Spielberg directs.

West Side Story was originally supposed to be released in December of 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was moved to Friday (December 10). You can meet the full cast of the highly anticipated film right here.
