Tom Felton Opens Up About The Fame That Came With Starring in 'Harry Potter'

Tom Felton is reflecting on being part of the Harry Potter franchise in a recent interview.

The 34-year-old actor, who became a household name after portraying Draco Malfoy in the eight film franchise, spoke to Square Mile about how the films changed his life.

Ahead of the upcoming Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion special, Tom got candid about if he feels burdened by the immense pressure and attention that comes from starring in the franchise.

“It’s a very common question. How do you shake off the burden of being part of these things? Honestly? I’ve never, ever felt that this is a weight to carry,” he said.

Tom added that the immense fame “can really affect you. I try to do as best as I can, really. We don’t really have too many examples – bearing in mind that when we did it, 20 years ago, obviously there was no social media. There wasn’t anything at all. To suddenly be in this world now where you can type in God knows what…I banned my mum from Googling me.”

He also spoke about how he’s probably one of the least recognized from the franchise, saying he gets “the best of both worlds.”

“I take the Tube, I take the bus, I walk my dog in the park. I saw Emma [Watson] the other night – she looks exactly the same as she did ten years ago,” Tom added. “It’s almost impossible for her not to be spotted. I get a lot of people whispering, ‘Is that whatshisname?’”
