The cause of death was Parkinson’s disease, according to the email sent by Paul Bogaards, an executive at her publisher, Knopf.

In addition to her essays and books, she also co-wrote screenplays for films like True Confessions, A Star Is Born, The Panic in Needle Park and Up Close and Personal.

Essay collections, including 1979′s The White Album, explored the idea and secured her position as one of the top writers and observers of the culture in the ’60s and ’70s.

The Year of Magical Thinking was adapted as a Broadway play starring Vanessa Redgrave.

She got her start with a summer internship at Vogue and writing for publications, including the Saturday Evening Post and the New York Times magazine. She met her husband John Gregory Dunne, a writer for Time, during her time at Vogue, marrying him in 1964.

After living in Los Angeles from the late ‘60s to the late ‘80s, she and her husband came to New York, where she continued living after his death in 2003.

Our thoughts are with Joan Didion‘s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

We have sadly lost all of these stars in 2021.
