Paul Bettany Addresses His Graphic Texts with Johnny Depp, Which Were Released as Part of His Libel Trial

Paul Bettany is speaking out to address his private text messages with Johnny Depp, which became public as part of the actor’s libel case against The Sun.

If you don’t remember, Johnny sued The Sun for libel over the paper’s use of the term “wife beater” to describe him. He lost the case and also lost a bid to have the ruling overturned.

The two actors have worked together on several films and have remained friends throughout the years. When Johnny was facing accusations from ex-wife Amber Heard, Paul tweeted, “Known Johnny Depp for years and through several relationships. He’s the sweetest, kindest, gentlest man that I’ve ever known. Just saying.”

Paul and Johnny texted each other in 2013 and wrote some graphic messages about Amber. The messages were made public in February 2020 when they were read aloud during a preliminary hearing for the trial.

Johnny reportedly texted Paul and said, “Let’s burn Amber!!!”

Paul reportedly replied, “Having thought it through I don’t think we should burn Amber – she’s delightful company and easy on the eye, plus I’m not sure she’s a witch. We could of course try the English course of action in these predicaments – we do a drowning test. Thoughts?”

Johnny‘s reported response was, “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!! I will f*** her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”

In a new interview that was just published in December 2021, Paul addressed the text messages becoming public. So, what does he have to say about the situation now?

While talking to The Independent, Paul was asked to comment on the texts becoming public. He said, “I think that’s a really difficult subject to talk about and I think that I just pour fuel on the fire.”

The article notes that Paul‘s publicist interrupted to offer him a way out of the topic, but he decided to forge on. He continued, “It was very strange. It was a strange moment… What was strange about it was you suddenly have one of the most scabrous newspapers in London and their lawyers pouring through your texts for the last 10 years. Can you imagine what it would be like, honestly, to have a bunch of lawyers go through every one of your emails and texts for 10 years? All I can tell you was that it was an unpleasant feeling.”

Johnny‘s defamation case against Amber is moving forward and his lawyers just subpoenaed a famous actor for a deposition.
